Plugging in an electric car is the simple, routine action that connects the vehicle to the electrical grid for charging, yet it is an action enabled by a complex system of engineering and international standards designed for utmost safety and reliability. The process begins when the user takes the charging cable, which may be attached to a charging station (tethered) or stored in the vehicle (untethered), and inserts its connector into the corresponding inlet on the car. This physical act engages several critical mechanisms simultaneously. First, the connector and inlet are shaped and keyed according to regional standards (like J1772, Type 2, CCS, or GB/T) to ensure only compatible plugs can be mated. As the connector is fully inserted, a latch or locking mechanism engages to secure the connection, preventing accidental disconnection during charging. This separate low-voltage circuit runs through the connector and inlet, and if it is broken (indicating the connector is not fully seated), the high voltage system remains de-energized, preventing any arcing or shock hazard. After communication is established, the charging station's contactors close, and power flows to the vehicle.
